Audition to be a Music Student

Milwaukee High School of the Arts is an Early Admissions school. Our admissions process begins in October of the prior school year.
Any student interested in enrolling must submit a written application, take a mandatory audition in one of the arts areas and submit their most recent report card, attendance records and state assessment results (most recent, from WKCE, Terra Nova or MAP)

To audition for the Music area, a student must bring the following to the audition:
Letter of recommendation: This letter should be written by a music teacher you have had within the last 2-3 years. The letter should include information about attitude in class, attendance, behavior, performance in class and musical ability.

Solo: You may audition using a piece from the Wisconsin State Music Association contest list, where you can search for your instrument. If your instrument is not listed, call 414-934-7020. Not required for Jazz Auditions (see exceptions below).

Exceptions for Jazz: Drums should prepare swing, bossa nova, rock, funk, and Latin beats. Woodwind and Brass students interested in both Band and Jazz must prepare for both auditions.

What happens at a Musc audition?

It depends on the ensemble:

Band: WSMA Solo, Bb concert scale and brief interview. Percussionists must play their scale on the bells or xylophone.

Voice: See special instructions

Piano: WSMA solo, two octave C and D Major scales, sight-reading, and interview

Strings: WSMA solo or Suzuki #3 book, Violin: 2 octave D Major All others: 2 octave G Major

Jazz: Solo using pentatonic scale over a 12-bar blues pattern.

Drums: prepare swing, bossa nova, rock, funk, and Latin beats

Special Instructions for Vocal Auditions

1. You may audition LIVE at MHSA on either of the audition dates or
2. You may video record and upload your audition to YouTube

For either audition, you will need to prepare the solo- To The Sky. If you already prepared a WSMA solo, you may use it for a video audition but you need to sing with accompaniment. You may not sing acapella or sing over another singer’s performance.
To The Sky melody
To The Sky accompaniment
To the Sky sheet music

You will need to respond to the following prompts:
1. “Tell me about your musical background”
2. “Why do you want to study voice at MHSA?”

If you're auditioning via video, you can upload it to YouTube (you can set the setting to private if you do not wish for the general public to view your video). Please name your video in the folloring manner: "2015 MHSA Vocal Audition- John Smith" (With your name at the end.)

Once your video is uploaded, copy and paste the link and send it to Mr. Raymond Roberts via e- mail: robertrj@milwaukee.k12.wi.us

Helpful Hints

  • Set the camera/phone up to record you from the waist up
  • Make sure you sing to the recorded accompaniment
  • Make sure your voice can be heard over the recorded accompaniment
  • Sing the song exactly as the sheet music and melody dictate
  • DO NOT EMBELLISH THE MELODY (I.E. ADD EXTRA NOTES OR ‘ROLLS’)

If you do choose to upload your audition, make sure you mail in your report card and letter of recommendation to Mr. Roberts' attention:

Mr. Raymond Roberts
MHSA
2300 W. Highland Avenue
Milwaukee WI 53233

Mr. Roberts will view both types of auditions equally. There is no preference given to students who show up to audition live over those who choose to upload their video audition.
